Old school Nor'easters
May 6, 2009

Let's hear it for Old School Northeast! This year's memorial picnic drew more “old school” northeast residents than ever this past Saturday (May 2) at Indian Mound. These folks know how to throw a party!
The event was the brainchild of Jimmy Mesh and Craig McQuillen and a few other middle-aged folks who grew up here in the neighborhood to pay tribute to some stand-up folks (mostly ball coaches) who are no longer with us.
The list reads like a who's-who of Northeast from the 1960s, 70s and 80s: Mike Mesh, Tony Mesh, Dominick “Duke” Mesh, John “Butch” McQuillen, Jack Bax, Roy and Carm Sherpy, Marion and Donna Smith, Mike Deevers, Carl Maggio, Anthony Maggio, Verl “tinker” Oliver, Anthony Palumbo, Rod Mullins, Joe Watson, Ron Johnson,
Bill Forrest, Bob Pate, Mona Tarranova, Anthony Tarranova, Virgil M. Pena, Richard Aiello, Sharron Scott, Joe Field and Mike Myers and a host of others who played a role in shaping young lives in Northeast "back when."

A wild ride
May 1, 2009

Northeast News staffers had a great time riding the new rollercoaster, The Prowler, May 1 at Worlds of Fun. The wooden coaster gives a two-and-a-half minute ride that is marked with speed and twists more than big drops. Although it’s a wooden rollercoaster, it has a different feel from the Timberwolf and reminded us somewhat of The Beast in St. Louis. The $8 million ride can be found in the Africa section of the park — over by the Zulu where that big water slide used to be back in the day. Just go to the left when you enter the park, and it’s just past all those Nordic-themed rides. We also included here a photo of one pretty kitty — a serval — that was on display for the big opening of the roller coaster along with two other big cats.

Royals game
April 29, 2009
If you haven't had the opportunity to take in a Royals game at the new Kauffman Stadium, I'd highly recommend it!There are new floor treatments along the concourses, new concession items, including Scimeca's sausage, and some nifty new time-passing features on the giant new scoreboard. On our night there, the Royals played some great ball on a cool, rainy night, beating the Toronto Bluejays 7-1. With a relaxed atmosphere and smaller crowds, it’s a nice evening out — if you don't break the bank plunking down $7 or more for a malted beverage!

Teriffic tomato
April 29, 2009

Growing garden vegetables has been a passion for long time Nor'easter John Coe. We happen to be at The Jigger (St. John Avenue and Belmont Street) a few weeks back when patrons proudly showed off some of John's handiwork over the winter. Because tomatoes here just aren't ready yet, we took note of this monster that weighed in at a little over a pound and was as red as a fire engine. It smelled pretty terrific too, not like the hot-house tomatoes usually found in area supermarkets during the winter.
Coe, who lives on North Drury, grew this beauty over the winter, in his basement, using organic soil and special fertilizer with what was described to us as "growth steroids." No word back from those who ate the fruit as to if they grew any after eating it.

Ajutant General's Ride
March 21, 2009

LEFT: Northeast residents David Remley, Jennifer and Brad Finch joined News Publisher at the after-party of the Ajutant General's Ride to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The event culminated at the Outlaw Cigar Company at I-29 & 64th Street on Saturday March 21st. Roughly 1,000 people attended the event and over $5,000 was raised to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The highlight of the event was the opportunity to meet Rocky Patel, (RIGHT, center, in pin-stripe suit) an internationally renowned cigar manufacturer from Central America.

Maple Boulevard circa 1939-1940
March 4, 2009
This 1940 tax photo comes to us courtesy of Tom Miele at Snyders Supermarket. The photo shows the 500 block of Maple Boulevard circa 1939-1940. The city of Kansas City ordered a massive tax assessment in 1939 and photos of every structure in the city were taken to document each parcel of land that was to be taxed. Miele's family lived on the second floor of the apartment building shown in the picture. The man holding up the parcel number is with the city. We don't know who the boy is however. If you do, please let us know who you think it may be. All of the structures in the photo have been demolished. Most recently, the house on the far right was razed by KCUMB to make way for a new surface parking lot.
