NE schools reprieved

March 3, 2010
by Emily Randall

Northeast High, James Elementary and Whittier Elementary schools are no longer on the list of schools facing closure in the upcoming school year.

John Covington, Kansas City, Mo. School District superintendent, revised his proposed list of schools to close Monday after hearing from approximately 1,400 parents and community members — many of whom fought for Northeast schools — in public meetings two weeks ago.

The list of schools to close still includes Northeast’s Woodland and McCoy elementaries, Scarritt Early Learning Center and, as a new addition, Northeast Middle (K-8) School. This brings the total number of schools proposed to close to 28, down from 30 in the initial proposal, in addition to the district central office downtown.

The school district’s Board of Directors will meet for a special session at 5:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Board of Education building, 1211 McGee St., to review and discuss the revised proposal.

The closings are a reaction to a looming budget shortfall of $8 million. The board members are slated to vote on the revised proposal March 10.
