Medical students show off their green thumbs

August 13, 2008

First-year medical student Jon Mares helps Della Lamb Elementary School children plant collard greens in Kansas City University of Medical Biosciences’ Community Gardens, located on the southern edge of the KCUMB campus. KCUMB Community Gardens is part an effort to provide assistance to low-income people, children and community groups to grow their own food and to encourage physical activity by working in a vegetable garden.

Students from Della Lamb Elementary School get some assistance watering newly planted collard greens from Darin Haug, D.O., dean of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences’ College of Osteopathic Medicine. During their first week of medical school, 250 KCUMB medical students take part in the KCUMB College of Osteopathic Medicine 11th annual Community Service Day at sites throughout Kansas City, beginning a commitment to service that will span their four years of medical school and beyond.
