District 1 County Legislator Scott Burnett has filed to run for reelection.
Burnett, a midtown resident, has represented the district, which encompasses Historic Northeast, since 1998. He said he decided to go for it again because he enjoys working with people and thinks he has done some good in the position.
“I pay attention,” he said, “and I think my being available, easily accessible… that I help people with a lot of problems — not only county situations, but many people call me about city problems. I know all the city people and I’m able to work a lot on city issues.”
Burnett said his greatest accomplishment in more than a decade as a county legislator has been creating a connection with the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Facility and Cabot Westside Health Center.
“I discovered that most of the kids that come into juvenile detention have never had their teeth checked,” Burnett said.
“They had horrible teeth.”
Today Cabot continues to work with the young people, offering dental services once a week.
Burnett said he has brought Historic Northeast’s needs to the county’s attention during his time in office. He said there are many people who never visit Northeast and aren’t familiar with its issues, but he makes the effort to stay knowledgeable about the community.
“I think by my knowing lots and lots of police officers and county officials, I can bring attention to crime and graffiti problems in Northeast,” he said.
If he is reelected, Burnett said simply that he would continue to help people with problems and work to make sure the county spends money responsibly.
