Anything that can make students excited to wake up at 7 a.m. during their spring break to meet at school has to be good. On Thursday, March 15, during the last few days of spring break, 15 students from Lincoln College Preparatory High School were on their way to Hale Arena in the West Bottoms for the eagerly-anticipated FIRST Robotics Competition. The robot build began in January, and regional competitions like the one in Kansas City, were last month. The Northeast High School's team, brand-new this year, took their robot down to Florida to compete there.

In Kansas City, Westport High School ranked 19th, Central 31st, and Paseo 43rd.

On Friday and Saturday, March 16 an 17, the Lincoln Tygberbytes played this year's game, "Rack 'n' Roll" in the qualifying matches and were later paired up with alliance partners, which consist of three different schools. All three teams did well in their qualifying matches.

Aside from winning the regionals, the Tygerbytes were also awarded the Delphi “Driving Tomorrows Technology” Award. The award recognizes any aspect of engineering elegance including, but not limited to: design, wiring methods, material selection, programming techniques, and unique machine attributes. The criteria for this award are based on the team’s ability to concisely describe verbally, as well as demonstrate, this chosen machine feature, according to the US FIRST Web site.”

In just a few days on April 12, the Lincoln Tygerbytes will attend the National Robotics Competition in Atlanta, Georgia. To watch these events live or in the archives, or just to get a better understanding of the game, visit www.usfirst.org.

All of us here at the Kansas City Missouri School District are proud of our Lincoln Tygerbytes and wish them well at the national competition.
