Museum officials to begin long-awaited renovation work

Meeting with city officials this week will kick off a renewed work schedule.

The exhibits have been removed, Corinthian Hall gutted and closed and the Buffalo has been sent to roam elsewhere.

But construction at the Kansas City Museum has been slow moving, and at times seemingly non-existent, as changes to the window and door project have pushed back the entire renovation and left some wondering when work will actually being.

But board members with the Museums Advisory Board said they will be sitting down this week with city officials overseeing the project to begin the crucial first step to jump-start the project.

“We will be sitting down with everyone and getting a full update as they begin construction here soon,” board president Gary Marsh said. “With the addition of the carriage house to the project things have gotten delayed slightly, but everything will be moving forward from here on out.”

Neighborhood officials started to question how far the museum project had progressed after seeing windows boarded up and little work being done.

But Marsh said that while there were a few stumbling points in the beginning of the project the meeting this week was designed to clear up any of those questions before construction was expected to begin.

The city has closed the museum for two years as they attempt to renovate all of the doors and windows while also installing a new air conditioning system in the aging building.

The overall project will restore the home to the way it looked when the Long family used to live there.
